| Val Cenis Lanslebourg
- The forts tour |
|
Historical barrier on the passageway to
Italy, the Mont-Cenis col saw, at the end of the XIXth century,
the erection of some of the greatest forts in the Alps ( 24 in
Maurienne) and, more recently, an amazing pyramid !
A journey into history and mountain architecture, the forts tour
uses part of the dam lake circuit. It is not reserved for the
best !

From
the Mont-Cenis pass, door to the Alps for 3000 years, take the
trail to the Petit Mont-Cenis hut.
In succession, you will see the chapel of Saint-Barthélémy, and,
at the end of the dam, the Variselle fort, under which the trail
goes.
After a short ride on the main road, you will be amazed by a pyramid.
Erected in 1968 by EDF, in memory of the Napoleonic campaigns,
it shelters a permanent exhibition on the history of the col.
In the middle of the grass, the Ronce fort lords over its environment
and provides a grand panorama. Back in Lanslebourg (the best can
even ride up to the col) do not miss the cheese factory and watch
them make Beaufort.
