Haute-Maurienne and its 3 plateaus
Difficulty

The route

A progressive climb before discovering the 3 plateaus of the upper Maurienne valley. The altitude difference explains the variations in architecture that are visible in the buildings, which are adapted to the snow, the vegetation and the pastoral practices that vary depending on the altitude.

A little history
10 centuries ago, Haute-Maurienne was only a passageway climbing the cols above Bessans, or Petit Mont-Cenis above Bramans.

At the end of the XIth century there was an agreement between Asti and the Count of Maurienne for the passage of merchandise across the Mont Cenis. Traders will be more and more numerous on this route.

What you should see
Each village deserves a detour, particularly for their numerous baroque churches and chapels, as well as the crosses, so typical of Haute-Maurienne villages. The Espace baroque in Lanslebourg.
