The
former Esseillon road snakes its way between Le Bourget and Aussois,
goes past the St Benoit waterfall and chapel and the 4 Sardinian
forts, Victor-Emmanuel, Charles-Félix, Marie-Christine and Charles-Albert.
Between Aussois and Sardières, a detour will take you to the Sardières
monolith, a true mineral challenge to rock climbers who reached
the top of its 93 metres only in 1957.
The return between Bramans and Modane is on RN6, and reveals beautiful
views on the series of the Esseillon forts, with the Marie-Thérèse
redoubt in the foreground.
A little history
The
five forts of the Esseillon defense system were built between
1819 and 1834 by Victor-Emmanuel Ist, king of Sardinia, to control
the passage to Piedmont, thus replacing the Brunetta de Susa fortress,
destroyed by Napoleon in 1796. The evolution of geopolitics and
technology will soon make them obsolete and they will only be
used as barracks and prisons.
