Lower Maurienne route
Difficulty

The route

Easy route (quite uncommon in our valley !) traversing hillsides and valley floor, it links the villages and lakes of Saint-Pierre-de-Belleville, Saint-Alban-d'Hurtières and Charbonnière. It partly follows the local "Mauriennaise"route.

A little history
In 1860, Savoie becomes French again and takes a strategic importance : the Aiton-Chamousset fort is built according to the defensive principles of Séré de Rivière.

The battery and barracks of the Aiton fort, a counter-battery in Montgilbert, other batteries and forts at intervals : the whole defensive system will be decommissioned later due to progress in artillery.

What you should see
