Valloire is a very pleasant mountain resort (1400m) offering a wide choice of activities all through the year and in many sports. It boasts two via ferrata (See Mountain Sports/Via Ferrata/Valloire and Télégraphe) and a dense network of well-kept paths all around the resort. The first two routes described below visit an area that is yet unspoilt by skilifts. These paths are short and easy and make for good family outings. The third route visits the not often visited Rio Ressin valley, climbs towards Pas de Pertuité and descends via Crey du Meigno and Poingt Ravier, giving wide views on the surrounding massifs. The latter route is much longer (elevation : 1100m, 3 hours) and there is no path after Chalet des Ramées. The last route, Crey Rond, is a classic (elevation : 1100m, 3 hours).

Poingt Ravier (1644m)

Poingt Ravier is a very small village perched high above Valloire. It can be reached by car but is best explored on foot, all the more so as it is surrounded by a few very good paths and an easy via ferrata.

Start

From the center of Valloire, take the road to Le Villard, walking past the ice-rink and the tennis courts.

Route

500m after the tennis courts, turn left on to the "eco-sylve" path (ecological forestry path). It is a very pleasant forest walk on an excellent path that is never steep. You will find all the information you want on the various types of trees that line the route. Half an hour takes you to Poingt Ravier. Draw left before entering the hamlet and walk up to a grassy mound above the houses and a chapel. The view on Valloire is superb (1698m, 45 mn, just below, the Poingt Ravier via ferrata ). To go back down, walk past the houses and either

  • go straight down to Valloire on a large path that winds down the steep grass slopes and the cliffs under Poingt Ravier. Come out near Rocher St Pierre (via ferrata).
  • or turn right on leaving the houses, traverse all the way to join (and visit) Gorges de l'Enfer, then on down to Valloire.

Pain de Sucre - The old larch

Click to enlargeThis route can be combined with the previous one, whichever way you use to come up. Longer, but just as easy. A few wet passages in Spring (crossing streams). 580m of ascent from Valloire, 1h30.

Go into Poingt Ravier and turn right or west (face the mountainside) in the village. The path traverses up the grass of the lower slopes of Crêt Meigno, crosses the Villard stream and goes past the Clot Albanel sheep-barn. Pain de Sucre is an obvious grassy mound which is climbed at the end of a plateau. Beautiful views.

Enter the forest then (north), take right as you go down and you will find the old larch to your right after a 15-minute walk. It is a very big, old, mean-looking gnarled tree that looks as if it existed before the coming of man.

Descent

You can climb back to Pain de Sucre and use the same route down the mountain. You can also continue down towards Albanette on a steep, sustained, winding forest path. Once on the road, turn right. In a bend (1449m), go straight on to a rocky trail that traverses under the crags of Rochers de L'Echerenne and joins Le Villard and finally Valloire.

Le pas de Pertuité - Le Crey du Meigno

Click to enlargeTake the path to Gorges de l'Enfer and climb to Les Solèdes (ruins). Turn left towards le Clôt de l'Ane and walk up the grassy coomb that follows. After the renovated chalet of les Ramées, do not try to cross the stream but climb the grassy slopes to the right towards Pas de Pertuité (2527m, no path). Turn right at the col, onto the easy ridge of Crey du Meigno (2546m). Nice panorama on the massifs surrounding Valloire.

When the ridge goes down, trend right to reach a couple of ruins and finally les Solèdes. A good trail goes down to Poingt Ravier, visible below, then Valloire.

Crey Rond

Park near Le Serroz and walk up the very pleasant shady path that leads to "Télésiège du Crey Rond" (signposts). Then take another path (not marked on IGN maps) that follows the ridge above the chairlift (signpost). The route stays near the wide ridge all the way to the top. The summit (2588m) marks the beginning of a long flat ridge that leads to Gros Grenier. Good views of the very austere valleys of Roche du Bonhomme, Gros Grenier and Pierre Fendue. Descend the same way.
