Magnificent summit at the borders of the Villards and the Hurtières massifs, and a long walk in a very wild and secluded valley. The path is easily followed up to the Lac de la Vallette, then vanishes. There is no real difficulty up to the Col de la Vallette, except the steepness of its final slope. However, the ridge that goes from the col to the summit is a more serious undertaking in very loose rock. Inexperienced walkers will stop at the col. Large groups definitely not recommended on the last ridge! 1700m of ascent, 6h. Start Take the Servion road in St Etienne de Cuines. After the picnic area, it turns into a forest trail which is to be followed up to the bridge under the Chalet de Lescherette. Park near the bridge. This point can be attained from St Rémy by another trail. It is possible, but not recommended, to drive a little bit further up the trail. Route Cross the stream and walk up its left bank on the trail and a few shortcuts to La Lescherette (chalet). On a good path, cross the stream coming down from La Pierre, walk past the ruins of the Vallette chalets and finally reach the small and secret Lac de la Vallette, hidden in a depression (2315m). Then up a grassy ridge that progressively steepens and turns into a scree gully near the Col de la Vallette (2668m). View on the small glacier in the north face of Pic du Frêne. The rest of the way is up the Frêne's north ridge. The climb is not difficult but the rock is very loose. The summit does not see too many visitors and the circular view is superb. Go down the same way. It is the only route up this summit that is accessible to the walker.
