A
classic route among ski-mountaineers, but not for the walker, which is a
pity because it offers an opportunity to go very high without really encountering
alpine difficulties. Map : IGN 3435ET Valloire. Time : 5h. Elevation :
1600 m. The path, not marked on the IGN map, stops around 2900m; the end,
fairly steep, unfolds in a more austere mineral landscape. The view on Aiguilles
d'Arves, very close and discovered at the last second, is breathtaking. This
walk should be avoided very early in season to avoid the spring snow.

near Bonnenuit,
on the Galibier road (signposts). Walk down a little to cross the Valloirette.
Route
The path first passes the Aiguilles chalet
(1845m) then goes up the Commandraut valley on the left bank of Torrent
des Aiguilles. It slowly gains height in the pastures, magnificent in early
summer.
Soon the vast mountainside that climbs from the Aiguilles d'Arves hut to
the summit is discovered. Around 2100m, traverse Combe du Puy, then Mauvais
Pas to reach the Aiguilles hut (2260m).

The path climbs behind the hut (signpost), then traverses
left. It is a long and pleasant climb in the grass. At about 2850m, the grass
disappears and rock prevails; follow the numerous cairns along the route and
avoid the boulder zones under the summit slopes. The best route passes under
the summit to reach the north ridge, which is then followed to the top. You
can also climb directly under the summit, but the loose shale is not pleasant
(desultory tracks). On arriving, the east faces of Aiguilles d'Arves appear
suddenly, very close and unexpected. The panorama is exceptional and rewards
the long climb from the hut. Descend the same way.
