Superb and long walk starting from Le Lavoir, above Le Charmaix and Modane (Valfréjus). From Modane, drive up to Le Charmaix, and turn right after the resort on to the dirt trail to Le Lavoir. Leave your car there (1900m). 1150m of ascent, 6 hours for the whole walk. You will discover the whole of the Thabor hut cirque. A few awkward passages on the ridge between col des Roches and summit 3014.

The Bataillères ridge

From the car walk up the dirt trail and reach a small dam after a few hairpins. There, turn left on to the Thabor hut access path (signpost). A bit higher up, leave to your left the Replanette col. The hut is visible on a grassy plateau in the distance. After 1h15's walk, reach the Vallée Etroite col on a comfortable path. Further on the other side is the Thabor's normal route. Turn right towards the Thabor hut. At the hut, you can see the whole of the Bataillères ridge, from Cheval Blanc to summit 3014.

Walk down behind the hut and along the two Ste Marguerite lakes (keep south). A signpost and numerous cairns signal the way to the Cheval Blanc col (trend left), where you will set foot on the Bataillères ridge. To your left (south), admire the cliffs. There are a few good rock climbing routes there.

The ridge itself offers no difficulty before col des Roches. At the Bataillères col, you will cross the Tour du Thabor GR57.

Beyond Col des Roches, continue on the ridge, which becomes progressively narrower. The last rocky passages at the end of the ridge can be avoided by walking across and up the easy scree slopes to the left of the ridge (west). Below the summit, go up a ramp which comes out on the ridge about 10m north of the summit (3014m). Admire the Sarrasins cirque north of summit 3014.

Descent : The best is to walk down and back to Col des Roches, then leave the ridge, and return to Le Lavoir by keeping close to the southern buttresses of summit 3014. A good path will take you back to the car.
